From the world of dark fantasy comes a new Korean Drama "While You Were Sleeping". As Kids, and secretly even now, we all wished to have some sort of superpower to make us feel extraordinary. But having superpowers comes with a great cost. This very concept is what forms the pillar for this series.

While You Were Sleeping is a Korean drama where fantasy meets romance. The story is written by Park Hye-ryun who is noted for her works like Pinocchio, I Can Hear Your Voice and Dream High. This is her second time writing a fantasy drama after "I Can Hear Your Voice". With such great writings in the past, we hope "While You Were Sleeping" will add to her list of successes.

While You Were Sleeping is about a female protagonist who can envision future in her dreams but the downside is her inability to stop any of those tragic events from happening. As fate has it, she meets the male protagonist and soon realizes that he is the only one who can change the course of the future events. As they team up and work towards changing the unfortunate events, they soon realize that in doing so they could end up worsening it. With the lives of the people at stake, it will be interesting to watch how our protagonists will save them. Also, watch out how the main protagonist's love story stands the trail of all the mayhem.

Who should watch this show?

If you love dark fantasy and curiosity gets you hooked, this is a definite watch. Also for those of you who want a new take on romantic stories, this is your go-to Korean drama. In general, every Korean drama fan should watch this. Be sure to keep some tissues ready because this is going to be an emotional ride, as said so by the director himself.

The main characters we know so far:

Nam Hong-joo - Who can see the future in her dreams.

Bae Suzy as Nam Hong-joo in While You Were Sleeping
Bae Suzy as Nam Hong-joo | While You Were Sleeping

Bae Suzy plays the role of Nam Hong-joo. She is a rather messy character who barely cares about her looks and can live an entire day wearing a sweatshirt. Most importantly she is a momma's girl. After losing her father, the only family that she has is her mother. She has a special bond with her, who is fun loving and their relationship is a key event to the progress of the story.

Hong-joo's power to see the future is both a gift and a curse. She believes that no future events can be rewritten and carries the burden of that inability until she finds Jung Jae-chan.

Jung Jae-chan - The prosecutor who helps Hong-joo

Jong-suk as Jung Jae-chan in While You Were Sleeping

Played by the charming Lee Jong-suk. He is Hoong-joo's new neighbour and possibly her future romantic partner and will help Hong-joo change the future events. He is a childish and self-obsessed guy, evident from him taking selfies all the time. On his first day as a prosecutor, he meets his old tutor-cum-enemy Lee Yoo-bum and you can already see the tension raising between the two.

Lee Yoo-bum - A prosecutor turned lawyer and Jae-chan's old tutor.

Lee Sang-yeob as Lee Yoo-bum in While You Were Sleeping
Lee Sang-yeob as Lee Yoo-bum | While You Were Sleeping

Lee Sang-yeob portrays the role of Lee Yoo-bum. He is one of the badass villains of the show. A heartless character who has perfected the art of manipulating people for his own benefits. Lying with a straight face is an easy task for him.

The first episode has formed a great base for the future episodes to build on. We now know what the main protagonists are capable of and how heartwarming the story is going to get. The first two episodes was a truckload of unexpected events and some crazy flash forwards. The show got us so involved with some of its nail-biting twists. [Spoiler] Like the one where Hong Joo is met with an accident and after a year in coma, she is awake in the future she dreamt a year back. It felt as though the gut-wrenching scene was actually happening and then came the twist. I never expected that the incidents starting from the car crash to Hong-joo falling off were all Jae-chan's dream. Gosh! that was a sense of relief. This has raised another question. Can Jae-chan also see the future in his dreams? From the trailers, it's unlikely. It might have been a one-time dream for Jae-chan to save her.

Suzy as an actor has immensely improved and the audience is happy. She flawlessly camouflages into the role and the chemistry between her and Jung-suk is clearly visible.

It wouldn't feel like a fantasy hadn't it been for the stunning visuals. While the series is only two episodes old, people are already raving about its greatness. Will "While You Were Sleeping" reach the success of "Goblin"? I hope it does.
